July 9: Mangrove Tour

Someone staying in our condo complex who's been here for a month suggested going on a mangrove tour.  We took her advice and so glad we did!

We could have gone by kayak or boat but knowing there's crocs and snakes around we opted for the boat.  No regret!
The first creature our guide spotted in the mangroves was this black boa constrictor.  It was really camauflaged in the branches - we would never have noticed it without the guide knowing what to look for.

Then came the highlight of the day!  When we spotted monkeys in the trees, the boat driver pulled right into the mangrove and our guide enticed the monkeys with some bananas.  They then came right onto our boat, jumped on our shoulders and we could feed them out of our hands!

Silky anteater curled up in a tree

Our guide caught this tiger face crab with his bare hands.

We would have missed this baby crocodile too if it wasn't for the good eyes of our guide.

Our tour ended at a local family's home for a typical Costa Rican breakfast: gallo pinto (rice & beans), scrambled eggs, toasted french bread and fresh fruit juices (orange, pineapple or tamarind)

We spent the rest of the day relaxing, swimming and playing our first game of Settlers of Catan in Costa Rica.  It was memorable......Sophia won for the first time ever!!!!
