$250,000 is needed in order to make this goal a reality. Every week parents stop by asking for information about El Puente. There is both a big need and interest in having the only bilingual Christian school in the area. El Puente would love to be able to grow its space so more students can become equipped to be bilingual community leaders through a Christ-centered education.
El Puente students are growing up bilingual and bi-cultural, which is a huge advantage in this heavily touristy area. They have Spanish and Social Studies in Spanish with Karina, a Costa Rican teacher. They have guided reading level groups in Spanish with me, and they have Bible, language arts, math and science with American teachers Aleasha and Ashley (above). The specials that George and I organize (singing, art and PE) are done in both Spanish and English, depending on the day.
Another strength of El Puente is its focus on literacy. Local public schools don't start teaching literacy/reading skills until first grade. At El Puente, the four and five year old preschool students are already learning their letter sounds, can combine consonant and vowel sounds and are showing a great interest in learning to read. One of the preschool moms just asked me today if I would work more with her daughter individually. Her daughter is very excited to learn to read but the mom said she doesn't really know how to help her daughter at home.
It is exciting to see how El Puente is having an impact on students and their families. It would be wonderful to see even more kids be able to attend El Puente.
